New! Outstanding In Our Field CD
Enjoy a variety of moods and styles as the Harpers Hall Ensemble and guest soloists present selections from Ireland, Scotland, Scandinavia, and beyond in this collection of instrumental and vocal arrangements featuring electric, as well as nylon- and wire-strung harps. Review: I was reviewing the new CD from Harpers Hall titled Outstanding in Our Field. With 20 tracks, it's a little bit of this, a little bit of that... Solo harp, ensemble, some with vocals, some with other instruments - a very entertaining compilation. Also, the liner notes specify make and model of the harp(s) used on many of the tracks. Always nice to credit the makers -be forewarned if you are shopping for a new harp and think this might be a resource for hearing the different sounds to aid in your decision – good luck special ordering a Bunker, Witcher or Rydecki harp... Although Melody's will be stocking these, all I've got is the sample (and I'm keeping that for my personal collection!). "Because the magical stringed instrument produces a pure, beautiful tone says harpist Verlene Schermer, "one that is soothing, uplifting, heavenly. Simply playing the harp against your shoulder creates vibrations that are like a massage, relaxing and therapeutic." So what happens when you hear 18 harpists on one song, or 30 on one disc offering their interpretations of traditional classics and original compositions? The effect is positively ethereal on this debut album by Harpers Hall & culinary society, Volume One of this collection (sold to raise money for harp workshops, concerts and retreats) is a must for anyone curious about the range of the harp, an acoustic instrument with an electric glow, one that has sometimes been mistakenly overlooked and miscast by some as musical wallpaper. Its 20 songs include powerful solo, duet and ensemble performances of Celtic and Classical standards as well as surprising interpretations of African, Latin and Blues. This diverse, rich collection answers another question that fans who have seen Harpers Hall and culinary society perform at games and festivals always ask: Where can we get this on a recording? Now, you can take it home and sample for yourself a piece of heaven on earth. Harp 2 is the intermediate part and Harp 3 is more advanced. All of these arrangements have been played by members of the Harpers Hall Ensemble.
